1. Interior Appropriations Bill

Last week, the House Appropriations Committee voted to pass the Interior Appropriations bill along party lines. This bill contains several provisions important to SCI and to all hunters, including language to prevent lead ammunition bans, to delist the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem grizzly bear, and delist gray wolf from Endangered Species Act. SCI has worked closely with members of the Committee to ensure these inclusions and thanks those in Congress who are dedicated to the protection of hunting freedoms and common-sense wildlife conservation. We look forward to seeing the bill advance on the House floor.

2. Happening on the Hill

SCI joined an American Wildlife Conservation Partners letter supporting the nomination for Katherine Scarlett for the next Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality. Read the letter here.

Last week, SCI participated in the annual Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation Recess Clays Competition at PG County Trap & Skeet right outside of Washington, D.C. The event served as an opportunity for Congressional staff to enjoy sporting clays and trap with conservation and industry partners. Participating for SCI was Federal Liaison Nick Uberti, Eastern State and Local Liaison Bee Frederick, and Bratton Willoughby and River Eubanks who are both wrapping up their summer internships with SCI.

3. Hunters’ Embassy™ Happenings

On Tuesday, SCI hosted a Hunters’ Embassy™ Lunch and Learn for Congressional Staff. Michael Williams of the American Suppressor Association briefed 30 staffers from the Hill on the current and future state of suppressor regulation, just weeks after the One Big Beautiful Bill passed with a measure to remove the $200 suppressor stamp tax. SCI thanks Michael and all attendees for joining us!

5. Update on Kambako Safaris Main Camp, Mozambique

In April, terrorists attacked and raided the main camp of Kambako Safaris. No part of the camp, its buildings, or equipment was spared save a lone Land Cruiser. Violence spread to nearby areas soon after. Since 2005, Jumbo Moore has operated in the Niassa Preserve in Northern Mozambique until now. This season he is moving clients to other destinations as he rebuilds the camp and strengthens security with an eye on hunting again in 2026. The Mozambican government has responded with the support of forty GOI soldiers; however, Jumbo will have to provide the financial support to host them. This expense, maintaining antipoaching efforts, and rebuilding the camp are costing hundreds of thousands of US dollars. Jumbo continues to restore Kambako Camp: “We have taken back control of our three concessions and are hard at work getting on top of the poaching, illegal logging, and mining that has sprung up in our short absence from the blocks. We are missing the physical presence of clients, Professional Hunters & trackers on the ground as this is a huge deterrent for locals involved in illegal activities.” SCI strongly condemns all terrorist activity and will continue to support hunting guides and outfitters through several of its programs.

6. Around the States (MO, AZ, UT)

Missouri: SCI submitted comments in the Show-Me State in support of expanding night coyote hunting with the use of artificial light, night vision and thermal equipment from 2 month to 8 months of the year, excluding spring turkey season. Read the letter here.

Arizona: SCI filed comments in the Copper State in support of the 2026 Spring and Fall hunting seasons for turkeys and bison. Read the letter here.

Utah: In the Beehive State, SCI submitted comments in support of the creation of an electronic tagging system, citing hunter convenience, cost savings and real-time data submission as benefits. Read the letter here.

7. SCI Proudly Sponsors Boone and Crockett’s 32nd Big Game Awards

Last weekend, Boone and Crockett held the 32nd Big Game Awards program in Springfield, Missouri hosted by Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, and the Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium. World records, state records, and countless youth trophies were displayed and honored at the weekend’s events. SCI proudly sponsored a display of taxidermied pronghorn and a happy hour on Saturday. Madie Demaske, SCI Litigation Associate, pictured above, attended on behalf of SCI. SCI’s partnership with Boone and Crockett is just one example of collaboration for the betterment and promotion of sustainable use wildlife conservation and the North American model.

8. Women go Hunting

It started with a friend request on Facebook in 2009. Ali Johnson had never been hunting before, but after a conversation with a friend she made through social media she found herself in a field hunting geese. Then it was turkey and then deer. She loved it so much that she became a snow goose guide and later a writer for Midwest Outfitter Magazine.

When she won a hunt to South Africa at a banquet, she told her husband she was going on safari. “Do you want to come along?” she asked, perfectly prepared to go on her own.
